Bestobell LNG complete first FLIV retrofit
Bestobell LNG has completed the first retrofit of its groundbreaking Float Level Isolation Valve (FLIV) aboard an LNG carrier, successfully eliminating a range of problems with secondary level gauge management on the vessel.

The FLIV, which is now fitted as standard on all new build LNG ships, has been installed on the LNG Finima, owned by Bonny Gas Transport – Nigeria LNG, and operated by STASCo.

By replacing the existing cryogenic gate valve on the main cargo tank, the FLIV has revolutionised safety and efficiency, enabling the tank to be isolated for maintenance and repairs, and eliminating the risk of tape cutting and trapped floats.

A second retrofit – aboard the LNG Bonny – is scheduled for later in the year. Both ships were built by Kockums in the early 1980’s, the cargo containment system is a GT88, and has a capacity of 133,000 cubic metres. The retrofit FLIV’s were commissioned after the existing gate valve and inspection chamber set-up proved unsuitable.

Andrew Brown, Bestobell LNG Director, said: “The FLIV represents a relatively small investment but can save LNG carrier operators huge sums of money. It’s a simple solution that makes a radical difference in terms of overcoming safety and operational problems experienced with traditional gate valves.”

Bestobell LNG is now working closely with Nigeria LNG and STASCo to explore the possibility of retrofitting a stillwell, in addition to the FLIV, aboard two older vessels without existing stillwells. The two ships – LNG Lagos and LNG Harcourt – were built by Atlantique in the mid 1970s.

Andrew Brown said: “We are now looking at retrofitting the FLIV on existing fleets with or without gate valves and inspection chambers fitted. We are confident that we will be able to successfully retrofit almost all LNG carriers, potentially saving the industry millions.” Replacing the gate valve with FLIV can be, in most cases a straight forward task with no modification required. The retrofit needs to be done during dry docking and the vessel must be gas free.
